Tips to Keep Your Windows Clean & Streak-Free

Whether you’ve just installed a new set of windows or you’re considering taking the plunge, your windows will require regular maintenance to help ensure your set stays clean, streak-free, and functional for years to come.

Clean them Regularly

Clean, streak- and smudge-free windows can make a huge difference when it comes to improving your home’s overall curb appeal. Regular cleaning can be a pain—particularly for windows in hard-to-reach spaces like skylights. In coastal areas, windows need frequent cleaning to combat salt sprays and humidity, but here in Iowa, this is a chore we only need to tackle once or twice a year.

We recommend scheduling your bi-annual window cleaning for mid-fall and mid-spring. Warmth from the sun causes soap to streak, so make sure you plan your cleaning in the cooler hours of the day. To clean your windows, soak the glass with a mix of water and soap to help loosen any stubborn dirt. Then use a mild window cleaner and a non-abrasive cloth to remove any remaining debris. Rinse, then dry your windows with a separate non-abrasive cloth. Don’t skip this step! If you allow your windows to air dry, you risk damaging the gaskets, sealants, and frames, or mildew forming around your windows.

Look for Damage

Damage (especially in older windows) might not be obvious at first glance, so take your time and inspect each window for cracks, splinters, holes, rotting wood, and broken glass. If you only notice light damage, you may be able to DIY a temporary solution, but severe damage needs to be addressed by a professional. Not only are damaged windows prone to leaks, but they also pose a security risk to your home and can increase your energy costs if they remain ignored.
